Virtual reality technology and its application in Distance Teaching

with the rapid development of science and technology, new teaching media continue to emerge. After multimedia, a new teaching media has emerged in the field of teaching technology, which is virtual reality technology. Therefore, it can undertake the task of high-speed transmission. Virtual reality technology uses three-dimensional graphics generation technology, multi-sensor interaction technology and high-resolution display technology to generate a three-dimensional realistic virtual environment. Users can enter the virtual space and become a member of the virtual environment for real-time interaction by wearing special helmets, data gloves and other sensing devices, or by using keyboard, mouse and other input devices, Perceive and operate various objects in the virtual world, so as to obtain immersive feelings and experiences

At present, virtual reality technology has been widely used in aerospace, medical practice, architectural design, military training, sports training, entertainment games and many other fields. In foreign countries, virtual reality technology has been applied to classroom teaching. As a new teaching medium, virtual reality technology will undoubtedly have a far-reaching impact on distance teaching. This paper mainly discusses the basic characteristics of virtual reality technology and its application in distance teaching

I. Basic Characteristics and types of virtual reality technology

virtual reality technology has the following three basic characteristics:

1. Immersion. According to the physiological and psychological characteristics of human vision and hearing, virtual reality technology produces realistic three-dimensional images by computer. Users can put themselves in the virtual environment and become a member of the virtual environment by wearing interactive devices such as helmet mounted display and data gloves. The interaction between users and various objects in the virtual environment is just like that in the real world. When the user moves the head, the image in the virtual environment also changes in real time. Picking up the object can make the object move with the movement of the hand, and you can also hear the three-dimensional simulation sound. In the virtual environment, all the feelings of users are so lifelike that they have an immersive feeling

2. Interactivity. Human computer interaction in virtual reality system is a kind of almost natural interaction. Users can not only interact with computer keyboard and mouse, but also interact with special helmets, data gloves and other sensor devices. The computer can adjust the image and sound presented by the system according to the movement of the user's head, hands, eyes, language and body. Users can inspect or operate objects in the virtual environment through their natural skills such as language, body movement or action

3. Multi perception. Since the launch of this project in the virtual reality system will help the sensing and response devices of vision, hearing, touch and kinesthetic for China's road conditions, users can obtain a variety of senses such as vision, hearing, touch and kinesthetic in the virtual environment, so as to achieve the feeling of being in the environment

virtual reality systems can be divided into three types according to their different functions

1. Immersive virtual reality system. Immersive virtual system is a complex system. Users must wear helmets, data gloves and other sensor tracking devices in order to interact with the virtual world. Because this system can isolate users' vision and hearing from the outside world, users can eliminate external interference and devote themselves to virtual reality. The advantage of this system is that users can be completely immersed in the virtual world, but the disadvantage is that the system equipment is expensive and difficult to popularize

2. Simple virtual reality system. The simple virtual reality system is composed of an ordinary computer system. Users can interact with the virtual environment through keyboard and mouse. For example, quick time VR (quick time VR) launched by Apple company uses 360 degree panoramic shooting to generate realistic virtual scenes. Users can truly feel the virtual scenes on ordinary computers with the mouse and keyboard. This system is characterized by simple structure, low price and easy popularization. It is an economic and practical system

3. Shared virtual reality system. Shared virtual reality system uses remote network to connect different users in different places and share a virtual space. Multiple users observe and operate the same virtual world through the network to achieve the purpose of collaborative work. For example, medical students in different places can perform surgery on patients in the virtual operating room through collaterals

second, the role of virtual reality technology in distance teaching

1. Make up for the lack of distance teaching conditions. In distance teaching, some teaching experiments that should be set up can not be carried out because of experimental equipment, experimental sites, teaching funds and other reasons. Using virtual reality system can make up for these deficiencies. Students can do all kinds of experiments without leaving home and get the same experience as real experiments, so as to enrich perceptual knowledge and deepen the understanding of teaching content

2. Avoid various dangers caused by real experiments or operations. In the past, for experiments that are dangerous or harmful to human health, TV videos are generally used to replace experiments. Students cannot directly participate in the experiments and obtain perceptual knowledge. Using virtual reality technology to conduct virtual experiments can eliminate this concern. In the virtual experimental environment, students can safely do all kinds of dangerous or harmful experiments. For example, virtual chemical experiments can avoid the dangers of combustion and explosion caused by chemical reactions; Virtual surgery can avoid medical accidents that cause the death of "patients" due to students' mistakes; The virtual aircraft driving teaching system can avoid the serious accident of aircraft crash caused by students' misoperation

3. Completely break the restrictions of space and time. Using virtual reality technology, we can completely break the limitation of space. From cosmic objects to atomic particles, students can enter the interior of these objects to observe. For example, students can enter the virtual power plant to investigate the working conditions of each component of the generator and the relationship between each component, and understand the whole power generation process, which is unmatched by television video media and physical media. Virtual technology can also break through the correct and skilled time and unified experimental operation is a very important limitation. Some change processes that take decades or even hundreds of years to observe can be presented to students for observation in a very short time through virtual reality technology. For example, Mendel's law of heredity in biology, it often takes several months to experiment with fruit flies, and virtual technology can be realized in one class

4. virtual characters can be used. The virtual reality system can simulate various characters such as historical figures, great men, celebrities, teachers, students, doctors, etc., and create a personalized learning environment, so that distance education students can learn in a natural and friendly atmosphere. For example, in the virtual classroom learning atmosphere, distance education students can communicate and discuss with false teachers and students, jointly discuss various problems in learning, and carry out collaborative learning. For another example, in the teaching of Ideological and moral education, students can have discussions and exchanges with virtual advanced figures such as Lei Feng and Kong Fansen, and influence students through the words and deeds of advanced figures, so as to achieve the purpose of Ideological and moral education. For another example, in foreign language teaching, we can use computer to simulate the situation of students' traveling abroad, let students talk with others, and achieve the purpose of training students' oral English

third, the application of virtual reality technology in Distance Teaching

virtual reality technology can provide students with a vivid and realistic learning environment, and students can become a participant in the virtual environment and play a role in the virtual environment, which will play a positive role in mobilizing students' learning enthusiasm, breaking through the key and difficult points of teaching, and cultivating students' skills. The application of virtual reality technology in distance education mainly includes the following four aspects

1. Knowledge learning. Knowledge learning refers to the use of virtual reality system for distance education students to learn all kinds of knowledge. Its application has two aspects: one is to reproduce the change process of natural phenomena or things that cannot be observed in real life, provide students with vivid and realistic perceptual learning materials, and help students solve knowledge difficulties in learning. For example, when learning geography, students will be taken to the north pole to enjoy the natural scenery through virtual reality system. When learning physical knowledge, virtual reality technology is used to show students complex physical phenomena such as nuclear fission and semiconductor conduction mechanism for students to observe and learn

Another application of virtual reality in knowledge learning is to make abstract concepts and theories intuitive and visualized, which is convenient for students to understand abstract concepts. For example, when learning the concept of acceleration, through virtual demonstration, let students observe the change of acceleration when changing the size and direction of the gravity of the object, so that students can deepen their understanding of the concept of acceleration. Expand the industrial experiment of replacing blast furnace with reverberatory furnace to treat high lead and bismuth containing materials

2. Explore and learn. Virtual reality technology can simulate various hypothetical models proposed by students in the process of learning, and the results or effects of this assumption can be observed intuitively through the virtual system. For example, in a virtual chemical system, students can combine different molecules according to their own assumptions, and the computer will simulate the combined substances. Through this exploratory learning method, students are likely to develop new materials. Using virtual technology, students can also explore and study the greenhouse effect, circuit design, architectural design and other aspects, so as to study the impact of carbon dioxide on the global climate, or design new circuits and new buildings. Using virtual reality technology for exploratory learning is conducive to stimulating students' creative thinking and cultivating students' innovative ability

3. virtual experiment. Using virtual reality technology, we can also establish various virtual laboratories, such as geography, physics, chemistry and biology laboratories. In the "laboratory", students can do various experiments freely. In the virtual physics laboratory, students can do experiments such as gravity and inertia. In the virtual geography laboratory, you can do experiments such as seismic wave propagation and volcanic eruption. In virtual biological experiments, various anatomical experiments can be done. In the virtual chemical laboratory, you can use various chemicals and tools such as scales, weights and thermometers to do various chemical reactions and observe reaction phenomena such as combustion and explosion

4. Skill training. The immersive and interactive nature of virtual reality enables students to play a role in the virtual learning environment and devote themselves to the learning environment, which is very conducive to students' skill training. Using virtual reality technology, we can do all kinds of skill training. For example, military combat skills, surgical skills, teaching skills, sports skills, car driving skills, fruit tree cultivation skills, electrical maintenance skills and other vocational skills training. Because these virtual training systems have no danger, students can practice repeatedly until they master the operation skills. For example, in the virtual aircraft pilot training
